What Causes Dirty Looking Bathroom Sink Faucets?

There are lots of reasons why your bathroom faucets get a dirty or cloudy exterior. Let’s talk a bit about how these factors affect bathroom faucets-

Reason 1: Water Spots

Water spots occur when water splashed is left onto the fixture. If the water is soapy or contains different chemicals, the impact is even worse. They make shiny-looking faucets dull and cloudy.

Reason 2: Limescale Buildup On Fixture

Limescale buildup is mainly caused by the magnesium and calcium presence in the water. They give a cloudy or scummy look on the faucet. The stains are more likely to be on the edges and aerators.

How To Clean Bathroom Sink Faucets?

In this segment, we’ll talk about how to clean bathroom sink faucets. We’ve provided two methods of cleaning below-

General Exterior Cleaning Method For Faucets

This is the first procedure to follow when cleaning a dirty bathroom sink faucet. In the beginning, we’ll start with general exterior cleaning.

We’ll be needing a few items to perform this procedure. Here’s what you’re gonna need-

  • Warm water
  • Dishwasher soap
  • Old toothbrush
  • Baking soda
  • Dental floss
  • Washrag
  • Dry cloth
  • A bowl or bucket

Have you collected all of it? Then let’s start cleaning.

Step-1: Make The Cleaner Solution

Take one of your bowls to add 2 cups of water that’s warm. Now, mix 2 tbsp of dishwasher soap in it. Mix them well so that foam is created.

Step-2: Apply The Solution

Take one washrag and soak it in your solution. Use the rag to scrub the faucet in a circular motion afterward. Go over the handle, neck, and base area repeatedly.

Scrub all the exterior areas gently. Soak the rag a couple of times after a few scrubs.

Step-3: Clean The Extra Stained Areas

We’ll use a different cleaning mixture for this. Take one cup or one small dish and add 2 tbsp of baking soda. Add some water to make a thick paste.

Now, take an old toothbrush and dip it into the paste. Apply it on the heavily stained areas. Clean the areas circularly.

Step-4: Clean The Small Cracks & Nooks

This step is necessary if there’s any crack or crevices in the faucet. If your faucet doesn’t have them, skip this part.

Now, to begin, take about 12 inches of dental floss. Place it in the areas where hands can’t reach. Move it in up and down motion to reach all the areas evenly. The dirt buildups would come out with the floss.

Step-5: Clean The Faucet With Water

Rinse the faucet with cold clean water. Clean out until all the soap and dirt are gone. Now, take a dry cloth and wipe off all the water from the faucet.

That was the general exterior cleaning process.

How To Remove Limescale From Faucets?

Normal dish soaps are not so effective against hard limescale. We suggest using white vinegar to do the job. Vinegar is also useful if you want to clean a bathroom sink.

However, if your faucet has nickel or iron finishing, it’s best not to use white vinegar. Rather go for a dishwasher instead.

In this procedure, we’re gonna need-

  • White vinegar
  • Old toothbrush
  • A plastic bag
  • Dry cloth
  • Rubber band

Step-1: Wrapping The Spout With Vinegar

Take a plastic bag and pour 1 or 2 cups of white vinegar in it. Now, attach the plastic bag to the spout of the faucet. Make sure the nozzle of the faucet is submerged in the vinegar.

Now, take a rubber band and fasten the plastic bag with it. Leave it for about 24 hours.

Step-2: Applying Vinegar Over The Exterior

Before removing the plastic bag from the nozzle, clean the other parts. Take a small piece of cloth and dip it into the vinegar solution. Now, drape the cloth around the limescale affected area. Leave it for about 1 hour. Keep the cloth saturated with vinegar.

Step-3: Applying Vinegar Over The Exterior

Remove the plastic bag and the draping cloth off the faucet. Now, take an old toothbrush and dip it into white vinegar. Scrub the areas with limescale. Continue it until you get the limescale off the faucet.

Step-4: Rinse & Dry The Faucet

After the scrubbing is done, rinse the faucet with clean cold water. Now, take a dry cloth and rub off the water from the faucet.

Hopefully, this has helped you to remove limescale from your sink faucet. By the way, you might have rust and corrosion on your metal faucet. In that case, just follow the basic corrosion cleaning processes.

Question: How to clean the inside of your faucet?

Answer: Firstly, make a cleaning mixture with 1 part of vinegar, 1 part of water, and ½ part of baking soda. Then grab a wire pipe brush. Dip it into the mixture and clean the inside of your faucet.
